The Southern Literary Trail is the focus of Mitchell Memorial Library’s latest 2nd floor exhibit. Established in 2005, the Southern Literary Trail connects three Southern states—Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia—in celebrating the lives, inspiration, and literary works of prominent Southern writers. The trail features a selection of authors’ homes and home towns and in some cases, buildings that inspired an author’s works such as the Monroe County, Alabama Courthouse that plays prominently in Harper Lee’s Too Kill A Mockingbird.
Organized and governed by a tri-state board, The Southern Literary Trail works in collaboration with local participants in each partner state of Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi. The Southern Literary Trail Board vote on the writers and places honored by the Trail in accordance with requirements stated in the Trail by-laws. In 2016, Mississippi State University was voted to be the new base of the Trail, offering access to the university’s resources and support and in doing so, allowing the trail to expand its goal of promoting the South's cultural heritage while celebrating its classic writers.
Featured in The Southern Literary Trail Exhibit, are photos and biographies of selected authors as well as examples of their works as noted on the Trail’s website. Located on the 2nd floor of Mitchell Memorial Library, this exhibit will be available through June 30, 2016.
