During the week of April 10th-16th, the Mississippi State University Libraries joins universities, schools, and communities nationwide in celebrating the dynamic changes happening in today's libraries. National Library Week, a time to highlight the changing role of libraries, librarians and library workers, was first sponsored in 1958 by the American Library Association and is now celebrated by libraries across the country each April.
Today, libraries emphasize services as well as the materials they provide patrons. Libraries aren't only a place of quiet study, but also creative and engaging community centers where people can collaborate using new technologies, attend information and digital literacy workshops, learn how to use 3D printers, scanners, and wide-format printers, and discover information resources needed for their personal or professional needs. In addition to the traditional in-person information services, libraries provide assistance via online chat services, email and telephone. Today, libraries provides access to thousands of online journals and electronic books as well as unique collections of materials digitized by the libraries to make them more widely available and accessible to researchers worldwide.
In recognition of National Library Week, the MSU Libraries are celebrating MSU faculty and researchers who published books during 2015 by highlighting the authors and their works on posters hung in the 2nd floor lobby of Mitchell Memorial Library. Those being recognized include Jack Blendinger, James DelPrince, Angela Farmer, Allison Greene, Cheryl Justice, Michael Kardos, Hall, Kimberely, Kelly Marsh, John Marszalek, KC Morrison, Evan Peacock, Cathrine Pierce, Daniel Wong and Lucy Wong Harnandez.
Throughout the week library faculty/staff will showcase library departments with displays advertising services while the Social Media Committee will highlight departments on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
Mitchell Memorial Library in conjunction with Maroon Volunteer Center will also host a food and clothing drive throughout the week. Everyone is encouraged to donate non-perishable food and used clothing. Donation receptacles will be available in the 2nd floor lobby.
