MaxxSouth Digital Media Center kicks off the semester with a new look and new services

September 12, 2019

It's a new semester and the MaxxSouth Digital Media Center in Mitchell Memorial Library is sporting a new look and offering new services to celebrate.

Following six months of renovations, the MaxxSouth Digital Media Center now features a fully-operational television study, a new collaboration studio, an AV studio, an expanded makerspace as well as its multimedia lab, CAVS Mixed Reality Studio and group and individual study areas.

The renovations were funded in part by MaxxSouth Broadband, and Mississippi State University's Office of the Provost and Executive Vice President, the College of Arts and Sciences, the Department of Communication, and the University Libraries. The funding from the College of Arts and Sciences Communication department supports the new television studio, which will be used for class instruction and to produce a weekly, live news show by Broadcasting majors. While the TV studio is open only to communication classes this fall, in the future it will be available to faculty, staff and students across the campus.

The AV studio will be open to everyone and will provide both video and audio capabilities. Patrons will be able to reserve time in the studio to produce podcasts, record or tape speeches or lectures, or other multimedia projects.

The collaboration studio is a combination meeting room and group study room. The room will be reservable and while it will be open to students if it is not in use, groups with reservations will take priority. The space is open to groups of five or more.

The Center's makerspace has a new, expanded setup and features die cut machines, a heat press, two sewing machines, 3D printers and supplies for crafts, hand sewing, knitting, cross stitching, building, modeling and more. And of course the CAVS Mixed Reality Studio, featuring HTC Vives, Oculus Rifts, Microsoft HoloLenses and two developmental computers continues to be one of the most engaging (and fun) spaces in the library.

The Center also has a fresh look after the renovations, with new paint and carpet and some updated furniture and art work. The goal of the refreshed space is to offer students a comfortable, collaborative work environment where they can study, learn, create and grow. Stop by the MaxxSouth Digital Media Center on the second floor of Mitchell Memorial Library and check the space out.
