STARKVILLE, Miss.— Mississippi State University Libraries joins the global academic and research community in recognizing International Open Access Week, Oct 19–25. This annual event highlights the importance of making scholarly research and knowledge more accessible to everyone.
This year’s theme, “The Cost of Knowledge,” invites researchers, librarians, publishers and other stakeholders to examine the financial, human and environmental costs of creating, sharing and sustaining knowledge, particularly when those costs are driven by private rather than public interests. The theme encourages conversations about the value of open access and opportunities to reduce barriers to scholarly information. International Open Access Week brings together individuals and organizations around the world to explore ways to expand access to research and scholarship. These conversations emphasize the role of open access in supporting the free exchange of ideas, advancing research and education, and treating access to knowledge as a public good.
Organized by SPARC and the Open Access Week Advisory Committee, International Open Access Week provides an opportunity for academic institutions and research communities to share resources, discuss challenges, and promote more open and equitable systems for sharing knowledge. Community members can learn more at openaccessweek.org and follow the conversation on social media using #OAWeek. MSU Libraries supports open access through resources and guidance that help the university community navigate scholarly publishing and increase access to research.
